HG identified 8 types of areas to study for the trail improvements. These areas are examples of existing condition types found in many different locations along the current path. These locations should be used as a case study to determine a method of proposed construction to resolve identified site constraints.
Goals of Study:
- Incorporate biking and pedestrian circulation into existing walking trail
- Provide a variety of program types to complement the trail: plaza renovation, trail expansion,
- seating areas, trail widening, lighting
- Improve and soften the visual appeal of the trail
- Improve access at points of entry
- Improve perception of trail safety through changes to lighting and sight lines
- Enhance existing amenities
- Widen the path where possible to 8-10 feet
- Enhance trail wayfinding, signs, and trail map
Design Issues to Consider:
- Approval process at Henrico County Planning
- Proximity to RPA (Resource Protection Areas), SPA (Stream Protection Areas) and wetlands
- Tenant use and access during construction
- Temporary trail closure due to construction improvements
- Construction access to trail to implement chosen improvements
- Drainage modifications due to widening
- Impervious surface area increase and impacts to site plans
- Access to existing utilities for lighting improvements
